Licensed Clinical Social Worker
“Honest, warm help with trauma and addiction”
In personOnline
Session languages: English
I am a clinical social worker and the owner of JClinic. I provide individual, couples, and family therapy for addiction, betrayal trauma, anxiety, relationship struggles, and major life changes. Trauma and sexual addiction are a large part of the work, and I also see people for ADHD, autism, and concerns in LGBTQ+ communities.
I have been in practice for about 10 years. I meet people in person and by video. Sessions usually last 50 to 55 minutes.
My approach is straightforward, compassionate, and real. I would rather ask "What's up? How are we doing today?" than follow a stiff script. We look for insight, name strengths, and make practical steps you can use during the week. Honesty and warmth matter to me, and humor has a place when a hard topic needs it. Alongside therapy, I offer family mediation, parent coordination, and supervised visitation for families going through separation.
I keep sessions like a real conversation. We talk about what is happening, look for insight, and name strengths you already have. Then we make practical steps for ordinary days. I am direct, and I will talk about hard subjects, including addiction and betrayal, without dressing them up. Humor shows up when it helps.
The methods I draw on include cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, trauma-focused work, mindfulness, and solution-focused therapy. Sexual addiction is work I do. Sessions are about 50 to 55 minutes, in person or by video.
General information from Kyan about each method, not a description of how Joe works.
Cognitive behavioural therapy looks at how thoughts, feelings and actions keep each other going. Together you notice the patterns that hold a problem in place and try out new ways of thinking and acting, often with small practical tasks between sessions. It is widely used for anxiety, low mood, stress and sleep problems.
Acceptance and commitment therapy helps you make room for difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. The focus is on what matters to you, and on taking steps in that direction even when things feel hard. It is used for stress, anxiety, low mood and long-term pain, among other things.
Trauma-focused therapy is a family of approaches designed for the effects of frightening or overwhelming experiences. Usually the work starts with feeling safer and more stable, and only then turns to the memories themselves, at a pace you can manage. It can help with flashbacks, fear, numbness and other after-effects of trauma.
Mindfulness-based therapy uses practices that train attention on the present moment, with openness rather than judgement. Noticing thoughts and feelings without being carried away by them can reduce stress and help break cycles of worry or low mood. Programmes such as MBSR and MBCT are well-known examples.
Solution-focused therapy puts the emphasis on what you want rather than on the problem. It looks for what is already working, even a little, and builds on your strengths and resources. The work is often short-term and practical, with clear, small steps.
