How therapy is paid for in Switzerland

Since 1 July 2022, Swiss basic insurance can cover psychological psychotherapy with a doctor's prescription and an eligible provider: up to 15 sessions per prescription, with a second prescription possible; continuing after 30 sessions needs the insurer's prior approval. Your deductible and the 10 % co-payment apply. Supplementary insurance and self-pay have different conditions. Missed sessions are never paid by insurance. Check coverage with the practice and your insurer.

Questions you might have

How do I choose a counsellor?

Compare consulting languages, focus areas, formats and fees. Their website gives more detail, and you can ask them about their approach.

How much does a session cost?

Prices come from each practice's published services. A starting price is not a quote for every service; confirm the fee with the practice.

Can health insurance pay for sessions?

It depends on your country, your policy and the practitioner. Look for the provider's checked insurance recognition and ask your insurer about your policy.
