Registered Clinical Counsellor
“Counselling for the relationships that shape you”
Online
Session languages: English
I am Samantha Hers, and I mostly go by Sam. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with Hers Counselling in Richmond, British Columbia. I offer virtual counselling for adults in British Columbia, and telephone sessions are also available. I work with individuals and with couples. The concerns I work with include depression, anxiety, stress, panic, trauma, grief, self-esteem, intimacy, family conflict, addictions and substance use, life transitions, and women's concerns. Premarital and marriage relationships are part of that work, along with personal growth and setting goals.
I offer a warm, non-judgmental relationship. We look at how your relationships have shaped you, and we look for new ways of being with other people. I draw on attachment-based therapy, person-centred counselling, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based practice. I also use narrative therapy, solution-focused work, cognitive behavioural therapy, and grief counselling. I love seeing people grow in their own confidence and make the changes they have longed to see. I believe in the courage to face what is hard and to embrace change.
Counselling with me is virtual. Telephone counselling is also available. I offer a warm, non-judgmental relationship where you can look at your thoughts and emotions. We look at how your relationships have shaped you, and we try new ways of being with others. I offer a steady relationship for this work.
I use attachment-based therapy, person-centred counselling, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based practice. Narrative therapy, solution-focused work, cognitive behavioural therapy, and grief counselling are also part of how I practise. What I love in this work is seeing people grow in confidence and make changes they have wanted for a long time.
General information from Kyan about each method, not a description of how Samantha works.
Attachment-based therapy looks at how early bonds with caregivers shape the way we connect with others today. Understanding these patterns can make sense of a fear of closeness or of being left, and of difficulties that keep coming back in relationships. The work aims at feeling more secure with yourself and with the people who matter to you.
Person-centred therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, starts from the idea that you are the expert on your own life. The therapist offers warmth, empathy and genuine attention without steering the conversation, so you can explore what matters to you at your own pace. Many people find it helps them feel heard and grow in confidence and self-understanding.
Motivational interviewing is a collaborative way of talking about change. It helps you explore your own reasons for and against a change, so the motivation comes from you rather than from pressure. It is often used for habits such as drinking, smoking or eating, and for health-related changes.
Narrative therapy looks at the stories we tell about our lives and ourselves. It separates the person from the problem, and helps you notice the moments and strengths that a problem-filled story leaves out. Together you develop a story that fits better with who you are and want to be.
Solution-focused therapy puts the emphasis on what you want rather than on the problem. It looks for what is already working, even a little, and builds on your strengths and resources. The work is often short-term and practical, with clear, small steps.
