About Seth

People come to me when they feel disconnected from themselves, when a relationship is a struggle, or when they are finding a new direction. Anxiety and tension are often in the room with us.

I use a relational and client-centered approach. My style is gentle and direct. I want respect, and I want accountability, at the same time. I have a background in somatics. I invite you to notice body and breath while we set goals and work on anxiety and tension. My work is psychodynamic, relational, and somatic. We can look at attachment, at patterns that no longer serve you, and at conflict in a couple. Therapy is serious work. I also believe it can be fun and exciting.

I am a marriage and family therapist. Before that I worked in music and theatre, grew up in Montana, and moved to San Francisco, where I practised and taught the Alexander Technique. I ran a studio on posture, coordination, and body awareness.

I am an active therapist. I listen, and I also challenge, celebrate, laugh, and cry with you.

How Seth works

We work with what is happening between us, and with what is happening in your body. Relational and client-centered means I stay respectful of you and of your culture, and I am both gentle and direct. Somatic work, for me, is an invitation to notice body and breath in the session, not a lecture about the body. Psychodynamic work is how we look at attachment and at patterns that used to protect you and now get in the way.

In somatic therapy we use breath, movement, gesture, and physical sensation as ways into emotional and relational patterns. This is not passive, and it is not the same plan for every person.

With couples I want practical tools for the feelings that show up around love, including uncertainty and jealousy, and a way through conflict. With gay men I am a gay man myself, and we can talk about work, sex, dating, romance, health, aging, and belonging, including wounds from culture, family, and church. The point is a relationship, with yourself or with someone else, that you actually want.

What happens in our first session?

We start by looking at what is keeping you stuck, and at what you are already bringing. I want that first conversation to point toward the life and the relationships you want. You do not have to have it sorted before we speak. I listen, and I also engage. I am not there only to sit quietly. We can get to work on the theme you bring, whether that is a relationship, a feeling in the body, or a direction you are trying to find.

Who do you work with best?

I work with adults, and with younger adults, as individuals and as couples. I especially work with gay men, and with other LGBTQ+ people, on identity, belonging, dating, sex, and relationships, including open relationships. Couples come to look at stuck patterns, trust, conflict, and what they want love to feel like. Individuals come when they feel disconnected from themselves, anxious, tense, or unsure of a next direction. I am a gay man, and a lot of the practice is built for gay men who want a therapist who has lived in that world.

What do you bring to your work?

I am active in the room. I listen, and I also challenge you, celebrate with you, and stay with hard feeling. I provide supervision for trainee and associate therapists, so I am used to thinking clearly about how therapy actually proceeds.

What experience do you have?

I interned at the Center for Mindful Psychotherapy and then moved into full-time private practice. I provide supervision for trainees and associates at the Center for Somatic Psychotherapy and the Center for Mindful Psychotherapy, and I serve on the board there.
