About Chao

People come to me with stress, perfectionism, relationship challenges, or the weight of family expectations. Some are in a life transition. Some are asking who they are, and what they really want.

I work with adults, and I see people one to one. I am a Mandarin and English-speaking clinical psychologist, licensed in Virginia. In English or in Mandarin, I offer a place where your full story, including its cultural, legal and relational parts, can be explored without judgment.

If the point is not only to feel better for a short while, but to understand yourself more deeply and to break free from old patterns, that is the work I offer. Reaching out can feel hard when you are used to carrying things on your own. The way I work is warm, collaborative and culturally sensitive.

How Chao works

I work from a humanistic, existential, multicultural and client-centered approach. I listen with respect, curiosity and care, and we look at what is happening in a relationship, in a transition, or in the question of who you are. I also use dialectical behaviour therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy, which fit well with Eastern philosophy.

I pay attention to intersectionality and identity, and to stress, perfectionism and the weight of expectations when those are what you bring.

Approaches

General information from Kyan about each method, not a description of how Chao works.

Person-centred therapy

Person-centred therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, starts from the idea that you are the expert on your own life. The therapist offers warmth, empathy and genuine attention without steering the conversation, so you can explore what matters to you at your own pace. Many people find it helps them feel heard and grow in confidence and self-understanding.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy helps you make room for difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. The focus is on what matters to you, and on taking steps in that direction even when things feel hard. It is used for stress, anxiety, low mood and long-term pain, among other things.

Existential therapy & logotherapy

Existential therapy and logotherapy look at the big questions of life: meaning, freedom, choice, loss and mortality. Rather than treating difficulties only as symptoms, they explore how you want to live and what gives your life meaning. They can be helpful at turning points, in times of crisis or when life feels empty.

Who do you work with best?

I work with adults who want individual therapy. You may be carrying stress, perfectionism, relationship challenges, or the weight of family expectations. I enjoy working with members of historically underrepresented groups.
