About Chet

Living with a chronic illness is part of the work, including the uncertainty, worry, and stress that can come with it. Loneliness is part of it too.

I start with the assumption that we are basically good, wise, and compassionate beings, regardless of our history, experience, or problems. In Buddhism this is referred to as your fundamental goodness. My approach is grounded in contemplative psychotherapy, which blends American psychological interventions with Buddhist psychology. It is also grounded in the practices of meditation and mindfulness, as well as practices such as loving kindness. We identify your presenting problem and interventions that can provide stability. Then, if you are interested, we can explore concerns that affect your happiness, questions about your purpose, or how you can live a more meaningful life.

How Chet works

I use a blend of therapies based on your presenting problem and what works for you. That range runs from short-term, solution-focused therapies to longer-term, insight-oriented approaches. I also use motivational interviewing, cognitive reframing, communication skills, exploration of coping patterns, stress management, supportive reflection, and symptom management.

Mindfulness includes meditation and other practices to calm your mind. I integrate those practices into evidence-based treatment. I take a holistic approach: physical, emotional, and spiritual health are interconnected, and the stresses of work, family, relationships, and lifestyle are part of the picture. Where trauma is part of what you carry, I provide trauma-informed care. Contemplative psychotherapy blends Buddhist philosophy and practice with Western psychological theory. I use it when you are interested and willing to explore it. We identify your stressors and develop specific, personal tools to manage your anxiety and stress. We work toward your goals at a pace that feels right for you.

What happens in our first session?

We can start with a brief consult, to see whether we can work together. When we begin, I work from an urgent care perspective. Together we explore what brought you to therapy, identify your goals, and develop a treatment plan. I then offer interventions and practices suited to you, your problems, and your goals. If you want to go further than stability, we can look at what affects your happiness, questions about your purpose, or how you want to live.

Who do you work with best?

I work with adults, including people aged 65 and over, and with other health professionals. I work with people facing anxiety, stress, loneliness, fear, trauma, grief, and addiction. Chronic illness is one of my specialties. Some are living with the ongoing effects of adult ADHD, or with a sudden change or loss, personal or professional. I work with concerns specific to LGBTQ+ communities, including coming out, family and relationship dynamics, and discrimination. My focus includes intersex, transgender, and nonbinary people. A lot of this work is also about purpose, fulfillment, and what it means to live a good and meaningful life. I see people one to one.
