About Russell

With CBT and EMDR, my practice focuses on tailored, collaborative care. Whether you are seeking treatment for long-standing difficulties or a recent crisis, my aim is to provide a safe and confidential space to address these issues.

I am a mental health nurse, and I use cognitive behaviour therapy, with an interest in trauma. I have worked in both the NHS and private settings since 2000. I am a BABCP accredited CBT therapist and supervisor and an EMDR Europe approved consultant. I also use ACT.

I offer EMDR face-to-face in Norwich and online throughout the UK. For PTSD and trauma, I also work online across the UK and internationally. Norfolk Therapy Services is LGBTQ+ friendly and neurodivergent-affirming, and you do not need a GP referral. I offer a free telephone discussion before you book, to answer any questions or concerns.

How Russell works

I work in collaboration with my clients, using a solution-focussed approach. The aim is to identify the problem along with causal factors and to develop a unique, person-centred treatment plan. My approach is open, non-judgemental and down-to-earth. I offer NICE-recommended therapies, including CBT and EMDR. I also offer acceptance and commitment therapy. EMDR is carefully paced and tailored to each person's needs and goals. The goal of ACT is not to feel happy all the time. It aims to help you live a rich and meaningful life, even when things are difficult.

Approaches

General information from Kyan about each method, not a description of how Russell works.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy looks at how thoughts, feelings and actions keep each other going. Together you notice the patterns that hold a problem in place and try out new ways of thinking and acting, often with small practical tasks between sessions. It is widely used for anxiety, low mood, stress and sleep problems.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured method for working with distressing memories. While you briefly bring a memory to mind, the therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or taps, which can help the memory feel less intense. It is best known for its use after traumatic experiences.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy helps you make room for difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them. The focus is on what matters to you, and on taking steps in that direction even when things feel hard. It is used for stress, anxiety, low mood and long-term pain, among other things.

Trauma-focused therapy

Trauma-focused therapy is a family of approaches designed for the effects of frightening or overwhelming experiences. Usually the work starts with feeling safer and more stable, and only then turns to the memories themselves, at a pace you can manage. It can help with flashbacks, fear, numbness and other after-effects of trauma.

Solution-focused therapy

Solution-focused therapy puts the emphasis on what you want rather than on the problem. It looks for what is already working, even a little, and builds on your strengths and resources. The work is often short-term and practical, with clear, small steps.

Questions and answers

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Research suggests that online CBT and EMDR can be as effective as face-to-face treatment for many common mental health difficulties.

How long are therapy sessions?

Sessions are typically 50-60 minutes.

Can EMDR be delivered online?

Yes. EMDR can be delivered effectively online using specialist tools and protocols designed for remote therapy. EMDR can be just as effective online as in person.

How often should I have therapy sessions?

This depends on the difficulties you are experiencing, but at the start of therapy sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly. As therapy progresses and you become more confident in using the skills and strategies discussed, the gap between sessions can often increase.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. A GP referral is not required.

Where do sessions take place?

In-person sessions are in Norwich. Online sessions are available throughout the UK. Trauma and PTSD work is also offered online across the UK and internationally. Online CBT and EMDR are offered for adults and young people in London.
