About Chase

People come to me with the emotional impact of a serious health condition. Some are living with a chronic, terminal, or traumatic illness or injury. Others are caregivers, including parents of a child with a serious health condition, and partners supporting someone who is ill.

I also see people who are relatively healthy and want a better quality of life, and professionals who want a steadier balance between work and home. Health care workers come with burnout, compassion fatigue, and the daily demands of documentation, discharge planning, and patient care. When a family member has a chronic or terminal illness, I work with the family as well as the person who is ill. Couples are part of that work when a spouse is ill.

I am a psychologist. Physicians look after the body. I help with coping, emotions, and the health habits an illness asks for.

I am originally from Lexington, Kentucky, and I grew up in North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. I later returned to Georgia and accepted a role as a clinical staff psychologist and as Director of Behavioral Medicine for a family medicine residency. From my own family, I know what chronic and terminal illness asks of the person who is ill and of the person giving care.

How Chase works

The work centers on strategies for coping with complex health issues. We look at how the illness affects your emotions, stress, and sleep, and we build coping strategies you can use. For heart disease, we work on the emotions around a diagnosis or a heart attack, and on lifestyle changes such as diet, sleep, quitting tobacco, and regular physical activity. This can include consultation with your cardiac team when that is already part of your care. For COPD I use activity pacing, breathing skills, and relaxation, alongside the treatment plan you already have. For diabetes, we work on the daily effort of managing it, including diabetes burnout, distress, and anxiety after hypoglycemic episodes. For sleep, I work on healthier sleep routines, using cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.

The grief process takes time. In grief counseling, I help with the feelings, including anger, guilt, and regret, and we build coping skills and a better understanding of your own experience. With caregivers, we look at the health challenges, the scope of your role, and ways to cope with your loved one's emotions and your own. I want you to have strategies for living better despite a chronic health issue.

What happens in our first session?

The first meeting is a secure video session, and you do not need a referral. The work is about the emotional impact of a serious health condition, including illness, trauma, or loss. I also support caregivers and family members. If we continue, later sessions stay with coping strategies and the objectives you bring. Individual sessions are 50 minutes, and there is a 15-minute introductory call if you want a shorter conversation first.

Who do you work with best?

The people I work with are those coping with the emotional side of a health condition. That is cancer, heart disease, diabetes, COPD, insomnia, and grief, and the caregivers and parents beside them. Professionals who are stretched between work and home fit here, including health care workers. Families come when illness is a shared problem, and I also work with couples.

What do you bring to your work?

I bring health psychology as the center of the work, and my own family background with chronic and terminal illness and caregiving. In session, that shows up as coping strategies, lifestyle changes, and a better understanding of the role the brain plays in wellness.
